INTERVIEW WITH LYON PORTER FOR THE NEW URBAN COWBOY – DENVER

INTERVIEW WITH LYON PORTER FOR THE NEW URBAN COWBOY – DENVER

Written by: Heather Zeske

Just in time for Urban Cowboy’s 10th Anniversary in 2024, a brand new 16-room boutique hotel is opening this Spring in the heart of Denver’s Capitol Hill. Known for uniquely styled spaces, The Urban Cowboy – Denver was created in the historic George Schleier Mansion originally designed by the prominent architect and hat tycoon E. F. Edbrooke in the 1880s. To honor its history, Lyon Porter who owns it with his wife, a Denver native, Jersey Banks, filled it with wonderfully chosen elements. Along with found treasures, it is adorned with over 75 Vintage Tub & Bath products for guests to enjoy. Relaying exciting details like the inclusion of an Outpost of Roberta’s, a Brooklyn favorite, and his creative vision, Lyon Porter was kind enough to sit down for an interview.

Heather: First of all, the hotel is beautiful! I am thrilled to have our products in it. What is your history with Vintage Tub & Bath?

Lyon: I love using products by Vintage Tub & Bath. In fact, our Catskills Lodge has quite a few. I was happy to include even more for this project.

Heather: What inspired your creative vision?

Lyon: The location dictates my vision. I like to honor the culture per location. Urban Cowboy is nostalgic. You can see that in our locations like our Nashville hotel and The Dive Motel. Denver is our 5th!

Heather: I love that. Tell me more. Do you have any insights about this project regarding that sentiment?

Lyon: Yes! It’s a wonderful property that was made at the turn of the century. There is something romantic about that fact and the past. It's crazy to think that people used to arrive at the location on horses and in buggies. With my design, I wanted to capture the “frontier spirit” and the idea of moving west in the Gilded Age.

Heather: What do you want to offer with this project?

Lyon: I want to offer unique hospitality. I want to let the public enjoy it. The property’s back carriage house was transformed into the Urban Cowboy Public House, a public bar and restaurant with Roberta’s Pizza as the food program, so people can get great cocktails and food.

Heather: What are things we should look for when we visit?

Lyon: The property’s details and how we honored its bones. There are secret elements throughout, tubs in every room, and even wallpaper that I designed.
