8 Top 2024 Kitchen Design Trends

2023 was a year full of exciting kitchen design trends. Everything from contrasting countertops and colorful, oversized kitchen islands, to mixed metals and cabinets in fun colors, could be found in kitchens of all design styles.

Some of these design elements are likely to still be popular in 2024, but the new year is bringing in new trends, too. Here’s a look at eight of the upcoming 2024 kitchen design trends.

1. Gold Finishes and Accents

What color is your kitchen faucet? If you’re like most people, it’s probably a shiny or brushed stainless steel finish. Or maybe it’s matte black or oil-rubbed bronze. However, in 2024, the design world is moving toward a new favorite metal finish: gold.

How do we know gold is going to be 2024’s hottest metal? It’s not just a guess. Each year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) releases a Kitchen Trends Report. The report is based on a survey of designers, remodelers, architects, manufacturers, and other professionals connected to kitchen design.

In the report, the experts ranked gold as the number-one color for kitchen faucets. When survey respondents were asked to choose the top kitchen faucet color for 2024, their responses were broken down as follows:

  • Gold: 49.5%
  • Stainless Steel: 48%
  • Black: 45%

You might be concerned that a gleaming gold faucet will look gaudy and out of place in your kitchen. However, the experts surveyed seemed to have a strong preference for muted finishes. Here’s how they answered when asked what type of faucet finish would be most popular:

  • Matte: 63.9%
  • Brushed: 54.3%
  • Satin: 48.9%

Of course, if you go with a gold faucet, you probably want to match it to the rest of the metals in your kitchen. You can choose knobs, handles, and even range hoods in gold finishes, too.

2. Moody Color Palettes

White kitchens have been popular for years. But if you want to give yours a facelift, try stepping away from white and into one of the major 2024 kitchen design trends: darker, moodier color schemes. Green is the most popular choice, with 31% of surveyed experts citing green as the preferred color for kitchens.

Why green? The world of home design has been trending toward nature-inspired, biophilic design for some time. In kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces, many homeowners are combining green with wood tones and other earthy shades.

If you aren’t quite ready to take the plunge and design a green kitchen, you might consider a less drastic jump to shades of cream and other warm neutrals. Even warm whites will give your kitchen a contemporary feel. In the new year, most designers are choosing to leave the stark, cool-white kitchen trend behind.

3. Layered Lighting

Does your kitchen only have a single light fixture? If so, it’s time to upgrade. In 2024, experts are emphasizing the importance of layered lighting. Layered lighting is just what it sounds like. It involves including lighting at different levels of a room.

For example, if you’re going to layer lights in a kitchen, you might start by creating a focal point with a large light fixture over the kitchen island. From there, you could add a calming ambiance with a few wall sconces before finishing things off with under-cabinet LED lighting.

Of course, when you’re layering your lighting, the color of your light fixtures makes a difference. Design experts seem to be moving away from the traditional silver fixtures. In the NKBA survey, 54% of respondents said that gold, bronze, and copper would be 2024’s most popular finishes for light fixtures.

While you’re updating your light fixtures, you might want to give your kitchen a high-tech edge by adding smart lighting features. Motion-activated, voice-activated, and programmable lights are perfect for conserving energy and making everyday life a little more convenient.

4. Wood Cabinetry

We mentioned that biophilic design is one of the major 2024 kitchen design trends. It’s not surprising, then, that natural wood kitchen cabinets are coming back into style.

In recent years, white cabinets have been the most popular. However, according to the NKBA survey, the resurgence of wood cabinets is going to be one of next year’s major color trends. Of the experts who responded to the survey, 28% said that wood will be the most common kitchen color trend in 2024, and 25% predicted that white will be the most popular color.

That said, some wood tones are poised to be more popular than others. Lighter woods are likely to take the lead over darker stains. They’re perfect for layering with other light neutrals to create a cozy, Scandinavian-style color scheme. Alternatively, if you’re interested in jumping on the trend of green kitchens, juxtaposing nature-inspired green shades with wood tones is a great way to evoke the outdoors.

5. Textured Backsplashes

You might already know that backsplashes offer you a great way to incorporate statement colors into your kitchen. But as we look ahead to 2024 kitchen design trends, it seems as though color isn’t the only thing that matters when it comes to installing a backsplash.

In the NKBA survey, 52.1% of respondents said that textured backsplashes were gaining in popularity. If you’re wanting to incorporate a textured backsplash into your own kitchen, you’ll have no shortage of options. Go for a bold, dramatic look with molded wrought-iron tiles or tiles with intricate, etched designs.

The rising importance of texture doesn’t mean your backsplash color choice isn’t important. A statement backsplash can add a burst of color to a mostly neutral kitchen. But if you’d prefer to keep the space quiet and monochromatic, you can always choose a subtle design that blends right into your existing color scheme.

And if the textured backsplash trend isn’t for you, there are other ways to create an in-vogue kitchen. For instance, solid-surface backsplashes are another option that perfectly blends looks and functionality. These backsplashes are made with a single slab of quartzite, marble, or other solid surface. Because there are no grout lines between tiles, they are exceedingly easy to clean. They’re also great for creating a

6. Beverage Stations

Whether you prefer coffee, smoothies, or cocktails, you might be interested in including one of the more surprising 2024 kitchen design trends in your remodel. Almost 60% of respondents in the NKBA survey said that demand for dedicated beverage stations within kitchens would increase in the new year.

There’s a beverage station for just about every kind of kitchen. If you’re short on space, you can add a small alcove with a basic drink-prep area. If you want to have your own complete bar right in your kitchen, you can install a bar sink, a dedicated beverage fridge, and plenty of storage.

It might seem unusual to have a separate sink and refrigerator in a kitchen. But if you’re rushing to finish preparing a meal or are entertaining a large group of people, having a separate beverage preparation area can make a major difference.

Find your own bar/prep sink: Vintage Tub & Bath offers bar and prep sinks for every taste and style of decor. To find yours, visit our kitchen sink page, go to the left-hand filter menu, and select “bar & prep sinks” under “category.”

7. Optimal Storage

Every kitchen offers some amount of storage space. However, designers are predicting that one of the primary 2024 kitchen design trends will be an expansion of — and a whole new take on — storage solutions.

In years past, kitchens had general-purpose cabinets. Many still do, but homeowners have begun to prefer specific storage solutions — things like small appliance garages, slide-out spice drawers, and butler’s pantries.

Designers and homeowners alike are also keen on space efficiency as we move into the new year. In the NKBA survey, 50% of respondents said they were looking for functional, space-efficient features like walk-in and built-in pantries.

8. Sustainability

If you have your finger on the pulse of the design world, you know that sustainability is a major focus — and not just in kitchen design. Energy-efficient kitchen appliances are always important to consider, too, and interior designers are finding ways to make sustainable living easier for homeowners.

In the NKBA survey, more than half (52.5%) of interior designers said they make it a priority to create kitchen storage space for recycling. Nearly a quarter (23%) said they prioritize creating space for composting.

For some homeowners and designers, “sustainability” is just a buzzword. But as more people from all walks of life begin doing what they can to help the environment, many designers have come to make sustainability a focus. Some have even made it part of their mission statements.

If you’re a homeowner who cares about the environment, don’t forget that even tiny changes can make a difference over time. And if you aren’t planning on completely overhauling your kitchen, water-saving dishwashers and energy-efficient lightbulbs are great places to start.
