    Teak

Teak has a natural tight grain with thick fibers which mill evenly without chipping or splitting. This is also a result of the challenging environment in which it is grown often withstanding monsoons, droughts, high winds and more. To resist these environmental changes, the fibers of the Teak tree bend rather than break, making teak a highly desirable wood for use in difficult conditions. In fact, it has been used in shipbuilding for hundreds of years because it requires little, if any, maintenance and it has a natural non-skid surface with barely any raised grain. Teak trees can grow as much as 40 meters (130 feet) tall and often live up to 100 years. The land on which Teak is grown has a high sand content that is absorbed into the body of the tree as it grows. Teak also contains oil in its heartwood that is water resistant and helps prevent attacks from decay, insects and bacteria. This oil also gives Teak its characteristic gleam even without oil or varnish.

In addition to the Burmese Teak, items are also available in Plantation Teak.

Burmese Teak Teakworks4u premium Teak made of pure heartwood from mature Teak trees grown in the Indonesia/South East Asia region. Heartwood Teak provides an elegant piece with unique grain patterns and a beautiful rich color giving any area an immediate WOW factor. The high silica content in teak makes it an ideal wood to use when a slip resistant surface is needed and the natural oil makes the wood resistant to mold and mildew.

Plantation Teak Teakworks4u FSC certified Plantation Teak comes from trees harvested from an actual plantation of younger Teak trees. Since they only use the heartwood of the tree, it has all the same qualities of old growth Burmese Teak but it is a little lighter in color.

Teak Maintenance While teak is naturally resistant to bacteria and mildew, soap residue, minerals or other impurities from your water may start to form some build-up. Therefore Teakworks4u strongly recommends performing routine cleanings each time you clean your shower or bathroom or when you notice some build-up. Remember that teak has a slip-resistant surface, but a soapy build-up can compromise this, so it’s important to clean the surface regularly. To keep your piece looking new, we recommend a deep cleaning at least every 3 months or more depending on use.

For a quick cleaning Apply water with a soft bristle brush (a mild soap solution can be useful as well) and lightly scrub the teak surface as well as the underside. Then rinse the teak surface with clean water and allow to air dry.

For a deep cleaning You may want to consider Teakworks4u Teak Cleaning Kit, TeakClean. This kit includes everything you'll need, including 10 cleaning tablets, scrubbing brush, gloves and teak oil. Otherwise, we recommend a commercial teak cleaner to remove any mildew or discolorations that have accumulated. These cleaners won’t strip the wood of its natural oils and non-slip characteristics. Teak cleaners are available from a variety of sources including boating supply stores, home centers or directly from Teakworks4u.

For weathered teak If you would like to restore to its original finish, it can be done with a little work. You will need to lightly sand the piece using commercial grade sandpaper. An 80 grit sandpaper is recommended to start with and moving up in grit as desired. You will begin to notice the original teak color restored. Then remove any dust and apply teak oil to the surface.
