6) Design Resources:
a) TileWe get a lot of questions about this subject and we know of several tile resources that are worth checking into. Architerra Northwest makes gorgeous tiles, and they have a number of dealers across the country that can assist you. Our second recommendation - Design Tiles of Mifflinburg (PA) - is a small firm that has done some impressive work – including hand-painted tiles and murals. Arts-and-crafts purists will love the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works - a working history museum that hand-makes vintage tile. Their museum is well worth a visit if you find yourself in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Arkansas-based American Restoration Tile has some really nice vintage-style tile for your next project. Finally, Monticello Tile Design of Carpentersville, Illinois offers a wide selection of beautiful floor medallions. Their website allows you to customize a medallion using a range of colors and materials, or they can work with you to design a one-of-a-kind floor piece using your own materials.
Due to its durability and fire resistance, slate has been used as a roofing material in the U.S. since colonial times. The production and use of slate shingles peaked in the late 1800's and early 1900's, though there are still companies in the Northeast U.S. operating quarries that mine and process slate into roof tiles. Greenstone Slate in Poultney, Vermont offers a variety of colors and shades of slate, along with technical information and installation advice. The New England Slate Company is also located in Vermont and has roof tiles and slate installation tools on its site.
In use even longer than slate, clay tiles have been around for thousands of years and are another stylish and sound roofing material choice. Deleo Clay Tile in Lake Elsinore, California offers roof tiles in a wide array of colors. Handmade clay roof tiles imported from Columbia can be found at Artezanos Inc., a family owned and operated company in Miami, Florida.
Slate and Copper of Erie, Pennsylvania offers copper gutter systems that are both beautiful and functional. For other decorative touches for your roof, check out the finials and weathervanes at Denniger's.
c) Reclaimed Wood
Reclaimed woods are an attractive and environmentally friendly choice in construction materials. The reclaimed wood available today generally comes from dismantled barns and buildings, though some is also culled from "sinkers" - logs that sank in America's rivers and streams on their way to the sawmill. TraditionalBuilding.com has compiled a thorough list of antique wood suppliers throughout the country. American Antique & Specialty Woods, Inc. in Warren, New Jersey offers flooring and beams made of reclaimed woods, as well as custom millwork of doors, furniture, cabinets, and moulding. Vintage Log and Lumber is a small company of craftsmen dedicated to preserving the vanishing heritage of the early pioneers of the Appalachian Mountains. In addition to floor planks, they offer complete antique log cabins and barns for sale that they will dismantle, number, and ship to you for reassembly at your location. Pictures and descriptions of the structures are shown on their site.
Vintage Fans, LLC of Keller, Texas specializes in the restoration of antique ceiling and desk fans that were manufactured in the United States from the 1890s to the 1950s. They have reconditioned fans available on their site and can also restore a vintage fan you already own. Reproduction light fixtures as well as refurbished vintage lighting can be found at Revival Lighting, which has retail outlets in Spokane and Seattle, Washington. Also located in Spokane, Luminaria has a huge selection of antique and reproduction lighting categorized by period styles. They also offer lamp shades and bulbs. On the East Coast, The Tin Bin in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania specializes in colonial-style lighting.
As a flooring option, brick provides a classic and durable look. Brick Floor Tile Inc. manufactures new brick tiles and veneers in a range of neutral and rustic tones, and also offers beautifully aged "Old Chicago Brick Flooring" that's been salvaged from buildings throughout Chicago. An extensive collection of vintage linoleum flooring from the turn of the century through the 1950's can be found at Secondhand Rose in New York, New York. They also offer a wide range of antique wallpaper, some dating back to the 1860's.
Hanna's Treasures has a trove of vintage wallpaper available for sale online, with photos and information on quantity of available rolls. If you are in need of having wallpaper you already own duplicated or reproduced, Burt Wall Papers of Benicia, California offers this custom service.
Tin ceilings became fashionable around the mid-nineteenth century and can provide a stunning focal point in a room. The lightweight panels are relatively easy to install and can be adapted for use on walls and as back splashes. Tinsmith Brian Greer's website TinCeiling.com offers a wide selection of sizes and styles of panels, as well as layout suggestions, installation tips, and a downloadable product catalog. Chelsea Decorative Metal Company also offers 6", 12", and 24" tin panels in a variety of designs.
f) Custom Shower Curtains
We receive many inquiries as to whether or not we have decorative shower curtains available for clawfoot tubs. We currently offer only one style of shower curtain - the heavy duty, extra long gb0984. Made of opaque vinyl, it is the ideal size for clawfoot tub shower enclosures. If you'd like to use this curtain as a liner and prefer a more decorative outside curtain, you would need three standard size (12 hook) individual fabric curtains. Alternately, there are a few companies that offer custom made shower curtains who can create one continuous fabric curtain to be used with your gb0984 liner. Contact A Well Dressed Kitchen for a quote on one of their custom shower curtains. They offer a wide variety of print, solid, and gingham fabrics and will send out free swatch samples upon request. Accent on Decor specializes in toile and country fabrics but will also custom create a curtain for you using material you provide. Finally, OutdoorFabrics.com custom makes their shower curtains using moisture and mildew-resistant Sunbrella® fabrics (no liner is required with these fabrics). Their website has a great tool that allows you to view a variety of fabric swatches in a sample clawfoot tub bathroom. In addition to the swatches pictured, their shower curtains can be made from any of the Sunbrella® fabrics or Indoor/Outdoor prints on their site. Typical leadtime for custom orders is four weeks.
