Founded by 29-year-old Austrian immigrant John Michael Kohler in 1873, the company started out with the purchase of the Sheboygan Union Iron and Steel Foundry in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. By simply applying a baked enamel coating to a horse trough, a new product line of clawfoot tubs was created.
